Frequently Asked Questions

BRICS brings together eleven major emerging markets and developing countries of the world: Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates. It serves as a platform for consultation and cooperation on global and regional issues, including political and economic governance.
BRICS was formalized during the first meeting of BRIC Foreign Ministers on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York in 2006. The first BRIC Summit was held in Yekaterinburg, Russia in 2009. South Africa joined the group in 2010, expanding BRIC into BRICS.
South Africa joined in 2011, forming BRICS. A further expansion occurred in 2024 when Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates became members. Indonesia joined the grouping in 2025.
BRICS consists of eleven countries: Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates.
In 2025, ten partner countries joined BRICS: Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.
India will chair BRICS for the fourth time in 2026. It previously held the Chairship in 2012, 2016, and 2021.
Seventeen BRICS Summits have been held so far. The most recent ones include the 17th Summit in Rio de Janeiro (2025), 16th in Kazan (2024), and 15th in Johannesburg (2023), along with earlier summits hosted across BRICS nations since the first summit in Yekaterinburg in 2009.
BRICS cooperation is organized around three pillars: political and security cooperation, economic and financial cooperation, and people-to-people exchanges. The agenda also covers issues such as terrorism, climate change, energy security, trade, agriculture, employment, telecommunications, and global financial architecture.
India’s 2026 BRICS Chairship theme is “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”. It reflects a people-centric and humanity-first vision highlighted by the Prime Minister during the 2025 Rio Summit.
The logo combines tradition and modernity. The lotus symbolizes purity, resilience, and progress, while its petals carry the colors of all BRICS nations to represent unity. At the center, the “Namaste” gesture reflects India’s spirit of respect, warmth, and collaboration.
